LITHGOW IRONWORKS.
THE BANK'S ATTITUDE. GREAT ANXIETY IN THE TOWN. Received December 9, 10.7 a.m. SYDNEY, December 9. The Commercial Banking Company has officially informed the Premier that the bank could not accept Parliament's terms for advancing money to the Lithgow ironworks. Mr Sandford, of the Lithgow works, also wrote to Mr Wade to the effect that the bank called upon him to pay the full amount of his overdraft. An officer of the bank takes possession to-day. The whole of the works, except the blast furnaces, will be closed. There is great anxiety in Lithgow, as practically the whole town is dependent on the works. It is hoped that the Government and Parliament will come to the rescue to prevent the works closing. THE CLOSING, OF THE WORKS. DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER. A FAVOURABLE REPLY. Received December 9,9.50 p.m. SYDNEY, December 9. A deputation, representative of the whole of the interests of the Lithgow district, interviewed the Premier to ask him to get the Government to use their efforts towards evolving a scheme to prevent the closing of the ironworks." They urged the importance of conserving a national industry, and drew attention to the disaster that was threatening the district and a large body of workers. Mr Wade, Premier, said that he realised the serious effect upon the State the closing of the works would have. The Government were fully in sympathy with the deputation. He required time to consider the mat* ter. He thought he could see a way out of the wood, and hoped that in a few days something would be evolved to save the industry and place it on a lasting footing.
