There were thirty-eight births, six marriages, and 'five, deaths in Masterton during the month of November. The President of the Masterton A. and P. Association D. Cruickshank) recently sent an invitation to His Excellency the Governor to be present at the next Masterton Show, and in reply he has received a communication from Captain Hardy, A.D.C., stating that His Excellency was thankful for the invitation, and would very much like, if he were able, to attend the show. He was, howaver, at present unable to give a definite answer, but hoped to do so in about a fortnight's time. E. W. Gunther, labourer, adjudged bankrupt, was examined by the Deputy Official Assignee " (Mr W. B. Chennells) at his office on Saturday morning. Mr C. A. Pownall appeared for the bankrupt. There were no creditors present. Bankrupt stated that his statement of sets and liabilities was correct. Dui*' ing the past twelve months he had only been engaged in casual work, and he had suffered from ill health, which had kept him back. He was at present shearing. He attributed his inability to pay his liabilities to his bad state of health. He had filed on account of the pressure of his creditors and he was unable at present to make any offer to his creditors. The proceedings were adjourned sine die. The arrangements for the annual concert of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society on New Year's night have been practically completed. There has been no fluctuation in j the price of oats and chaff in Masterton for some time past, but merchants are anticipating a drop in prices when the new season's crop comes on the market during this month. Prices for dairy produce are unchanged. Last week's return from the Antonio dredge was 20oz 18d\vt. FKIM-MILK AND DISEASE. During the month of November two cases of bankruptcy were recorded in the Wairarapa. During, the corresponding month last year there was no bankruptcy. For the eleven months ended November 30tb there have been eleven cases as against nine rases for the corresponding period of 1906. After a good deal of hard labour, and much trouble on the part of those engaged in the work, the accommodation hut has been erected on 'Mount Holdsworth. The hut, which is situated at the upper camp contains three rooms, two of which are sleeping-rooms, the other being a living-room. A number of mattrasses and cooking utensils have been placed in the building for the benefit of those making the ascent of the mountain, and there is sufficient accommodation for about twenty persons. More, of course, could be accommodated if it were absolutely necessary. Mr D. McGregor, sent-., who has from the inception of the idea taken a leading par 1 -, in securing this convenience, has worked untiringly in the erection of the hut, and he is to be congratulated on the result of his labours. The track up the mountain, as the result of the packhorses frequently passing over it while the hut was in course of construction, is now well defined, and it should not be difficult for amateur mountaineers to find their way to the top without the assistance -of a guide. The tourist traffic up the mountain will shortly commence, and now that the hut is-completed it is expected that considerable.numbers will make the ascent for the purpose of seeing the many natural beauties which abound in the locality. A horse attached to a delivery cart belonging to * Messrs Ogilvy and Sons, butchers, bolted from the front of their premises in Queen Street, on Saturday, and, swerving across the street, collided with, and smashed a post in front of Messrs T. Dwyer and Co. 's building. The horse was stopped before other damage was done. A flower service was held in S. Matthew's Church, yesterday at'teri noon, a very large number of children being present. The church was tastefully decorated for the occasion with flowers of various description, and these after the service were sent te the public and private hospitals in the town. The Vicar, Kev. A. M. Johnson, conducted the service. The Masterton Municipal Band did a very wise thing in taking one of the sse streets for their outdoor programme on Saturday night. The onlookers were thus enabled to gather round and enjoy the music without fear of blocking the traffic, or of being run over. The spot selected, near the Age office, is well suited for such a purpose, both Perry and Bannister streets appearing to be too narrow, besides which the vehicular traffic is considerable in these thoroughfares. . There was a large number of bowlers on the Masterton Bowling Green, on Saturday. The results of the games played were as follow: — Johnson, Bartlett, Cresswell, Cameron (skip). 17, beat Mutrie, Pyke, 0. Beetham from Mr Eglinton, of Pahiatua. * Their future home will be at Mr Trevor Beetham's station Taurata, Colyton. The difficulties that stood in the way of one efficient pipe band being established in Vaster-ton, owing to the intention of the present Masterton Pipe Band not to amalgamate with the Wairarapa Caledonian Society, and the latter body's efforts to form- another band under its own auspices, have been overcome. Representatives of the two bodies have agreed to the formation of one pipe band, the management of which is to be in the hands of a committeeof four members from the Caledonian Society and four from the present pipe band. Officers of the new band are to be elected annually by the band, with the exception of a secretary, who will be chosen by the Caledonian Society. The management of the band will be quite apart from the Caledonian Society. Under these conditions Mr W. C. Buchanan has consented to supply all the uniforms for the band. In connection with the cornet solo, which our critic "Lynx," in his notes on the Masterton Band's performance on Saturday eveninc, refers to as being "high set," we gather that this solo is laid for the soprano cornet, who was unavoidably absent. In order not to disappoint the people the selection having been announced in both local papers, it was decided tn endeavour to do without the player in question, and the B-flat cornet assayed to take his part. As the latter, however, was just recovering from an injured lip, it was not as successful as it otherwise might been. The following officials have been appointed to carry out thearrangements for the Societies' sports on Boxing; Day: Judge of chopping events, Mr A. Johnson; assistant secretary, Mr E. The recently-formed Tararua Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club commenced the season by opening their green at Carterton on Saturday afternoon. There was a large attendance of players present, including a number from Masterton and Greytown. After the formal opening, some good games were played. Afternoon tea was provided by a committee of ladies. It is a most extraordinary thing. > says the Southern Cross, that although Southland is noted for being such a fine dairying country, butter is being sent here from Wellington —and good butter at that—and retailed at Id per lb cheaper than the local article. There must be a screw loose somewhere. We (Manawatu Times) have been unable from the outset to see 'a valid reason for bringing bookmakers back to the racecourse. Hitherto the effort' has been to keep them off it, and leave the field to the totalisator, which is devoid of the weaknesses of the ring and contributes so nicely- to the income of the clubs. And unqMtatiorably no one familiar both would fail to prefer the machine to the human pencillcr. It is understood that the fight between Mr J. A. M'Cullough and Mr R. Slater for the position of Work-;, ers' Representative on the Arbitration Court was a very close one, though Mr M'Cullough's lead is sufficiently decisive to leave no prospect of the result being upset. The Minis * ter for Labour, the Hon. J. A. Millar, stated en Saturday that he was not then ready to give for publication the actual numbers of votes recorded, though they would be available later. Speaking at the Native Lands Commission at Gisborne, on Saturday, the Chief Justice said that' the only i hope the Maoris had; if they desired jto live, was to become efficient j farmers. If they did not do this, but loafed about, the race would die out. The Masterton County Council insert a notice abolishing the Taueru pound. Mrs J. H. Anderson, of therlfiable registry office.
