BY TELEGRAPH - PRESS ASSOCIATION. DIVORCE COURT. WELLINGTON, November 27. Decrees nisi were granted in the following divorce cases to-day:— Goody v. Goody (wife's petition), Roberts v. Roberts (husband's petition), Smith v. Smith (wife's petition). FIRE AT A GASWORKS. ASHBURTON, November 27. A fire at the gasworks destroyed a storeroom and the workshops, but did not affect the supply of gas. TRESPASSING AT RICCARTON. FUTHER CASES AGAINST BOOKMAKERS. CHRISTCIIURCH, November 27. Several further cases of trespassing on the Riccarton racecourse were before the Court to-day. Counsel for the bookmakers argued that the legislation subsequent to the laying of the information showed that the Government were opposed to the cases. He suggested that the informations should be ' dismissed and laid again if the club thought fit. The bench of justices ultimately decided to adjourn the cases till December 11th, so that Mr Day, S.M., who heard tho previous cases should adjudicate in these. Substantial costs were allowed to the bookmakers.
METHODIST SYNOD.
NAPIER, November 27. At the session of the Wellington District Synod of the Methodist Church, to-day, it was decided to recommend the conference to grant permission to the Wellington city eircjit to divide the circuit, and to form a separate charge at Thorndon, and also to grant the application of the Trinity. Church, Wellingtonj for an additional Minister to work in the circuit. The South Wairarapa circuit was again relieved of its obligation to provide for a minister in full connection. A home missionary was applied for by the Masterton circuit, and this was also grante"d. The South Wairarapa circuit applied for a probationer to be placed at Featherston. The synod having thoroughly . discussed the matter granted the application. The synod recommended that the conference place a probationer at Norsewcod next year. It was unanimously recommended' that the question of placing an agent at Waipukurau be put before the home mission executive for immedk ate attention. Mr Benbow presented the church property and schedules report. The report revealed the fact that in Ijhe district the church holds 91 sites, valued at £16,071 2s sd; 48 churches,* (8,403 sittings), valued at £23,036 6s 6d; 16 schools. (3,770 sittings), valued at £6,016' 12s 4d; 17 parsonages, valued at £8,427 16s 8d; 15 other buildings, valued at £6,287; a total value of £59,838 17s lid. It was intimated that Miss Florence L. Thompson, of Napier, was immediately proceeding to take up a position in the training institution at Übuia, New Guinea, as a missionary sister. The Synod decided that, while regretting the legalisation of the bookmaker and totalisator, it complimented and thanked the Premier, Sir Joseph Ward, on the passing of the Gaming Bill. The Synod held their financial meeting this evening. The Synod recommends the conference to contribute £SO to the Wellington suburban circuit from the Home Mission Fund, as a special supplementary grant for the year 1908. The conference was requested to invest the bequest of the late Mrs Wilkinson to the Home and Foreign Missions Fund in New Zealand for the benefit of the above fund. It was decided to hold the next Synod at Wellington. FOUND IN A RIVER. WANGANUI, November 27. The body of an old man, named i William Lewis, aged 72, who had been missing since Saturday last, was found in the river .this afternoon. CONFERENCE OF MASTER PRINTERS' ASSOCIATIONS. CHRISTCHURCH, November 27. A conference of representatives of the different Master Printers' Associations of New Zealand was held to-day, when it was decided to form a federation of the associations. The following executive was elected:— President, Mr Selig (manager of the Christcburch Press Company); VicePresident, Mr W. G. Somerville (Dunedin); Council, Messrs G. H. Whitcomb (Christchurch), L. D. Banks (Wellington), Wilson (Auckland), F. Pirani (Feilding), and W. Stone (Dunedin). A motion was carried affirming the desirability of fixing a standard basis for the cost of composing and letterpress machining, and each affiliated association was required to lay the matter before its mombers and to forward the result to the federation.
