ACCIDENT TO A STEAMER. Received November 27, 10.14 a.m. SYDNEY, November 27. The foremast of the steamer Ootiah struck as the vessel was leaving the wharf. The truck was shattered, and the flag came fluttering to the deck; otherwise the steamer was undamaged. TORNADO AND THUNDERSTORM. Received November 27, 10.14 a.m. SYDNEY, November 27. _ A tornado swept Collarendabri, and did damage to the extent of £I,OOO. The storm lasted twenty minutes. The thunderstorm, yesterday, was so severe that it' interfered with telegraphic, telephonic, and tramway srevices in all directions. A tramcar was struck by lightning in North Sydney and rendered useless. LATE NEWCASTLE STRIKE. VESSELS AWATING CARGOES. Received Novemer 27, 10,35 a.m. SYDNEY, November 27. As a result of the resumption of work, coal is coming forward in large quantities. At Newcastle over sixty sailing vessels and twenty-two tramp steamers are awaiting cargoes. FIRE IN A MINE. TWO HUNDRED MEN IDLE. Received November 27, 10.18 a.m. - SYDNEY, November 27. Owing "to the destruction by fire of the poppet heads at Block 14 mine, Broken Hill, 200 men have been rendered idle. SPEECH AT FREMANTLE. Received November 27, 10.34 a.m. ' FREMANTLE, November 27. Mr Keir Hardie, British Labour M.P., was welcomed by Labour representatives. Referring to his call at Government House in Ceylon, he states that hp simply called and left his card, as other people do. Reverting to India he said the peasants are in the last stage of poverty; for the last ten ytars famine and plague have been with them nearly all the time, and in consequence their stamina is gone, they have no resources to fall back upon, and generally speaking their lot is deplorable. LITHGOW IRONWORKS. GOVERNMENT OFFERS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. Received November 27, 10.25 a.m. SYDNEY, November 26. Correspondence in connection with the application of the Lithgow ironworks for financial assistance from the Government has been published. The Government offered, subject to ratification by Parliament, to advance £70,000 at 4 per cent., repayable in twenty half-yearly instalments. W. P. CRICK. Received November 27, 1.25 p.m. SYDNEY, November 27. W. P. Crick was to-day called upon to show cause why he should not be struck off the High Court Solicitors' Register. He undertook not to practice pending an appeal to the Privy Council. SUICIDE OF A BARRISTER. Received November 27, 10.25 p.m. SYDNEY, November 27. A body with a bullet wound in the head and a revolver by its side, was found on the cliffs at Bondi. It has been identified as that of Albert Horton, a barrister, late of Auckland. H« arrived some weeks ago on a holid:y trip. There is nothing to indicate the reason for the deceased committing suicide.
NEW SOUTH WALES ELECTIONS. PERCENTAGE OP RECORDED. Received November 27, 10.52 p.m. SYDNEY, November 27. A synopsis of the voting at the late State elections show that the percentage of votes recorded to the number enrolled was: —Males, 72.11; females, 60.78. TROUBLE IN AN OPERA COMPANY. Received November 27, 11.55 p.m. MELBOURNE, November 27. The troubles connected with the German Opera Company culminated in the issue of writs against George Musgrove by Hans Mohwikel and Karl Poller,' claiming steamer fares from Melbourne to Genoa. Foller also claims arrears of salary. A third writ issued by Frits Rupp claims for alleged breach of contract and arrears of salary.
