The West Indian Club banquetel Mr Lucas, of the Colonial Office, at the Grand Hotel.

The High Commissioner for New Zealand (the Hon. W. P. Reeves), Captain Collins, the Commonwealth representative, and Sir R. Solomon, representing the Transvaal, were called upon to respond to tbt toast, "The Self-governing Colonies." In the course of his speech Captain Collins remarked that Mr Lucas' appointment had initiated a new depar-* ture. He added: "Though it is only a small beginning it indicates the road we shall travel in the future."
