THE DRAINAGE QUESTION.
(To the Editor). Sir, —It is to be hoped that the Mayor and Borough Councillors will read your leader in last Thursday morning's issue—not only read but take warning and improve on what has been done in the past. It is scandalous that a town of the size of Masterton should be so backward with regard to its drainage. When one speaks of the drainage question to the council, the cry is, "Oh we have no money." This is, I consider absurd, for if the council only decide to go on with the drainage, ths money can easily be found. The ratepayers have found the mon ;y in the past, and will do so again to wipe away this great evil from our midst. To give you an instance why the council should at once arise from their lethargy and proceed with the drainage extension, I might say that the house I live in is situated in a thickly-populated street, almost in the heart of the town, and is not connected with the drainage. Ail slop waste is therefore consigned to a cess-pool, right at my back door. The consequence is that all through the winter and even at the present time, it has been full and overflowing, and the stench at times from this , fever-bed—l can think of no other name —is abominable. Jf this state of affairs i 3 not remedied, some disease must arise, and for the sake of my chlidren, I am compelled to remove to another portion of the town. The council evidently is dead to the interests of the community, otherwise they would do something. Hoping that jojr efforts will bear fruit.—l am, etc., ANTI-FEVER.
