POLL-TAX ON CHINESE.
PROPOSED INCKEASE REJECTED, By Telegr iph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Friday. In the House of Representatives, to-night, on the third reading of the Chinese Immigrants Amendment Bill, Mr J. T. M. Hornbsy moved an amendment that the third reading be postponed in order that the Government may reconstruct the bill and impose a higher poll-tax, namely, £2OO, on every Chinese entering the country. The Premier, in opposing: the amendment, referred members to the statement appearing in the Financial Statement showing that a high tax did not retard the entry of Chinese, but that the most effective course was to impose an educational test. He also pointed out that Mr Hornbsy took no exception to the proposals contained in the Budget Statement. The amendment was negatived by 56 to 10, and the bill was read a thij»>; time and passed-on the voices.
