MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING
The fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held, last evening, and w,as attended by the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine), Crs J. H. Pauling, Jas. Elliott, F. W. Temple, A. Haughey. VV. Morris, J. C. Ewington, J. Yarr and 3. Prentice. An apology for absence was received from Cr W. Pragnell. Mrs H. L. Meredith, of "Brooklyn," wrote asking for a one-inch water supply to her house as the present half-inch pipe had become corroded and was giving an unsatisfactory supply..
Cr Morris objected to giving such a supply. He would always oppose such applications. Cr Pauling favoured granting the application as it was to be used for bath purposes, and the house was practically the same as a hotel.
Cr Ewington said there was no doubt that the pressure in a halfinch pipe was practically lost in four or five chains. He favoured the application provided the cost of installing the larger service was borne by the applicant. In answer to a question by Cr Temple, the Mayor said an extraordinary water service was, in his mind, one that was used for business purposes.
Cr Ewington suggested that the Council should raise the standard of water supply from half inch to threequarter inch. The Mayor said that was a matter that could not be dealt with at present.
Cr Haughey urged the Council to be careful with the application, as, if it were granted, it would establish a precedent, and everybody would be wanting an inch service. After further discussion, a motion by Cr Yarr to refer the application to the Inspector to inspect the premises and report, was carried by five to four.
Cr Eliott said he wished to call the Works Committee's attention to the fact that some of the street lamps were generally out or were burning in the daytime instead of night time. He hoped the matter would be attended to.
Cr Temple said it was a long time since the Council had heard anything of the works that were going on in the borough. He did not wish to hurt the feelings of the Works Committee, but he earnestly hoped they would take steps to have some of the necessary woik in the borough carried out before next winter came on. Cr Pauling, in reply, said the committee had perhaps been a little lax of late, but they were aware of what had to be done. The acting engineer had now a list of all the works in hand and those to be carried ou*;, and in less than a fortnight the speaker felc sure that the Council would notice a difference in the Works Department. Cr Haughey moved that the matter of street lighting be placed under the supervision of the gas committee instead of the works committee as at present, the change to take effect from December Ist.
Cr Pauling seconded the motion, which was agreed to ananimoualy. Accounts amounting to £659 15s 8d were passed for payment.
