CHILD SLAVERY IN TARANAKI.
DISCUSSION IN THE HOUSE. THE CASE FOR THE DEFENCE. By Telegraph—Parliamentary Correspondent. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Child slavery in Taranaki formed the subject of a discussion in the House of Representatives this afternoon. Mr A. L. D. Fraser drew attention to the statement recently made by the Chief Justice on the subject, and this brought all the Taranaki members to their feet in refutation of the allegation of j child slavery. Mr Laurenson urged that an enquiry should be made into the subject of child labour in that provincial district. Mr Massey threw in his weight for the defence, and declared that as far as health and education were concerned, the children of Taranaki would cempare with the children in any of the other districts of the dominion. For once the Premier agreed with the Leader of the Opposition, and expressed the opinion that an enquiry might well be deferred. So. ended the discussion.
