PARK AND LIBRARY COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Borough Park and Library Committee was held last evening, and,was attended by Crs J. C. Ewington (chairman}, F. W. Temple, J. Prentice and W. Morris. The tender of Miss Rive, at £3l 3s, was accepted for the supply of magazines and periodicals to the library for an indefinite period. Tenders were received for repairs to and painting the tea kiosk in the park and the gates at the entrance, and that of Mr W. H. Cole, at £7 18s, was accepted. The supervision of the work was left in the hands of Crs Terr pie and Prentice. A complaint having been received from the Stock Department that the Council have permitted the continuous growth of noxious weeds on certain borough lands, and the committee having been served with the statutory notice to eradicate such weeds, the chairman was authorised to have the matter attended to. In reply to a letter from the committee with reference to the acquisition by the Government of a piece of native bush near the Waipoua river for purnoses of scenic reserve, Mr A. W. Hogg. M.H.R., wrote suggesting that the committee should ascertain the price the owner places on the land, so that negotiations might be opened up with a view to the Council purchasing the piece of bush and obtaining a grant in connection therewith from the Tourist > Department. The committee, before recommending any such action, decided to appoint the chairman and Cr Morris to wait on Mr Hogg and report. An application was received from the St. Patrick's Day Sports Association for the use of the Park on i March 19th, 1908, with permission to make a charge at the gate. The application was granted, the fee being fixed at £lO. It was further decided to inform the association that the cycling track was not in a fit condition for use, and if it is used the Council do not hold themselves responsible for any accident. The committee resotved to invite tenders for the letting of the park tea kiosk for a period ending April 30th next, tenders to be deposited by noon on the 14th inst. It was resolved to meet again to draw up the conditions governing the letting of the kiosk. The water service at the park being insufficient to"meet requirements, it was decided to recommend that a lin service be laid from the Dixon Street main through the park gates, to connect with the existing pipe in the park. This will necessitate the laying of about four chains of piping at an estimated .cost of £5 10s for the pipes. The labour will be provided by the staff at the park, and the Works Committee will make the necessary connection free of cost. Cr Morris reported that he had obtained promises of subscriptions amounting to £4O for the beautifying of the Kuripuni triangle. He expressed his willingness to collect this sum, and the committee requested him to do so. Accounts amounting to £3 16s 3d were passed for payment.
