By Telegraph—Press Association
PALMERSTON N., Oct. 30.
The Manawatu A. and P. Association show opened, to-day, ihjdeal weather. A very large crowd was present during the day, and in every way the show was very successful. The exhibits were admirable. The art technical school exhibits were highly creditable. The exhibits of implements were not up N to the previous standard owing to the "decision of the New Zealand implement makers not to exhibit at any "shows this year. The various sections of home industries and poultry were uniform in excellence, and the judges made complimentary remarks concerning the exhibits. A few ring competitions were judged to-day, the prinicipal results of which were as follow:—Gentleman rider, W. J. Bartlett; bare-back rider, Miss Abbott; driving competition, Miss Robertson; maiden hunter, W. Bartlett's Scout. The pony section showed outflwo ide: - fully well, the entries being very n* e, and the polo ponies exceptionally so. Ths principal lesults were as follow: —Entire pony, G. Wiggins' Peail King; pony mare, T. Edlin's Trixy; pony mare or gelding, Giffo:d Moore's Juliet; polo pony, mareir gelding, Gifford Moore's Romeo. Only part of the harness horse sections were judged. The exhibifs were very good throughout. Results : —Pair harness horsfs,. J. Walker's Branes and Duke; pair harness ponies, H. Stephens' Kitty and Dolly; tandem team, J. Bull's bays, Molly and Belladona. The pig section was well filled. The judge gave it as his opinion that, though the entries were not so numerous as on some previous occasions the quality throughout was on a higher level, and more uniform. In the Berkshire section the champion boar was Mr H. Lancaster's imported. E. White won a number of prizes The Tamworths, according to the judge's opinion, were hardly up to the other standards. They seemed to be crossed and thus lost some of the characteristics of the breed. The champion in this section was E. White's boar. The middle and small Yorkshires were an excellent exhibit, but the judge was of opinion that the Association were making a mistake in the method of classifying the sections. B. Gray's boar was champion in this section. The large black or Devon pigs made a very fine show. There was no entry in the boar class. Mrs E. Weeks' sow was awarded the champion in this section.
The poultry exhibits were well worth seeing, almost every breed of domestic fowl being represented. Messrs R. E. Bannister, and W. Cook carried off a number of prizes in various sections.
The pigeon class was well filled, and formed a good exhibit. To-morrow the judging in the live stock sections will continue, also the ring competitions. The weather promises to be.beautiful, and everything points to another highly successful day. A large number of visitors and pressmen were present. The announcement that Parliament will adjourn to allow the Premier and Leader of the Opposition and members to attend has been received with satisfaction. It has been arranged that the visiting party shall be entertained at luncheon by the president and officers of the association. They will ,be met at the station and conveyed round the town in motor-cars.
