RACING.
TURF NOTES. * (By Zetland). A large number of horses were worked on the plough at Opaki, yesterday morning, and were more numerous than usual. R.Knox was first out, and Lucretius and Platypus ran over seven furlongs in good style, the latter having an advantage at the finish. Royal J Blua cantered twice round. The Merrie England gelding is none the worse for his exertions at Trentham -last week. Gaelic galloped a mile, and Merrie Rose cantered two circuits. San Julie and Thera were associated over seven furlongs. They were together for half a mile, when San .Julie drew away and finished up about three lengths to the good. Aberration, Sunbonnet, Moloch, Riflemaid, Research, and Oakley put in good serviceable gallops, but were not out for time-making. Fulminator ran a mile, and Silver Shell put in two rounds slow. Tilson was sent a mile, rattling over the last half mile. Somali, Tatoo,Strathcona,Uhlando, Roya> Maid, and Splendid" Idea were treated to easy work. Tiwha galloped a mile and a quarter in fair time, and The Stake went seven furlongs in good style. Gawain went pleasingly over six furlongs, and is showing improvement. Dulcinea, Speciosa, and Moeraki went out to run a mile. The pace was put on from the start, and at the finish Dulcinea had a slight advantage of Speciosa, with Moeraki close up. f Matakokiri .went well over two rounds, and is showing improvement on his Trentham form. A number of ou'side horses arrived during the day, and the fields at the meeting to-morrow should be large throughout. The course proper is in splendid condition, and fast times should be registered. On yesterday's gallops, horses that should run well forward at tue meeting are Platypus; San Julie, Royal Blue, Aberration, Moloch, Sherlock Holmes, Uhlando, Splendid Idea, The Stake, Strathcona, Gawain and Speciosa. To these must be added the best of the candidates that arrived yesterday. Selections for first day will appear to-morrow. William, Playmate, Swimming Belt and Gauze have been scratched for all engagements at the Masterton meeting. St. Amelia has been scratched for the Hurdles on the first day, PLEMINGTON GALLOPS. On the tracks this morning Mountain King and Tartan covered a mile in lmin 49sec, Lady Diffidence a mile in lmin 52sec, Matterfoon a mile in lmin 55Jsec, and Mazarin a mile in lmin 55sec. Tangaroa galloped over ten furlongs in 2min 23sec. Bon Grafton covered five furlongs in lmin lOJseo. Moolta'n was sent a strong working gallop with Knox for a mile, done in lmin 55sec. Other ~ gallops were —May King, half a mile in 55sec; Saraband, a mile in lmin sUsec; Marmont, ten furlongs in 2min 24sec. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. Post Correspondent. CHRISTGHURCH, October 22. All the work to-day was done on the plough, which was newly harrowed. The times were therefore slow. Trainers were unwilling to extend their charges, and the work only comes under the comprehenaive heading of "useful." Glenculloch moved freely over a mile and a quarter in 2min lOssc, and was anxious to improve the pace. Petrovna did better. Silkweb went half a mile in 50 3-ssec. Mahuta, Probable, Master Delaval, and Elevation ran a mile and a half easily in 2min 47 3-5 sec, Mahuta and Probable finishing in front, but none were extended. Idealist did a good gallop of six furlongs, but eased off before reach- | ing the post. Armistice and Koran ran a mile and a quarter in 2min 14 l-ssec. Fireiron went five furlongs in lmin 3 l-ssec, and is evidently improving fast. Nothing else was important, but a large number of horses worked. AUSTRALIAN BETTING. By Telegraph—Press Association. The latest Cuu quotations are:—s to 2 against Apologue, 8 to 1 Moun- . tain King, 10' to 1 Tartan and Poseidon, 12 to 1 Mooltan, 14 to 1 Dyed Garments. The Derby quotations are:—lo to 4 on Mountain King, 7 to 1 against Master Foote and Welcome Trial. TARANAKIJOCKEY CLUB. CHRISTMAS MEETING. In another column the abridged programme of tho Taranaki Jockey Club's Christmas meeting is adverti :ed to take place on December 26th and 27th. Eight events are to be run each day, chief among which, on the first day, arc the Christmas Handicap of 120 sovs, Stewards' Hack Handicap and Flying Handicap, of 80 sovs each, and on the second day tho New Plymouth Handicap of 100 sovs, Summer Hack Handicap of 80 sovo, Farewell Handicap of 70 sovs. Entries will close with the secretary, Mr Mussell Fleetwood, at New Plymouth, on Friday, November 22nd, at 9 p.m.
