THE FLAX INDUSTRY.
A SLUMP FEARED. . By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, October 22. The rumours of a slump in the flax industry were strengthened by the opinion expressed, to-day, to a Post reporter by Mr Hawkins, Government flax grader. The market he says is weaker than for some time. Good to fair quality is only bringing £25 10s here and it costs a Manawatu flax miller about £26 per ton to produce it. Some millers are hound to close down unless there is a change for the better. '•There is one compensation that I must mention" said Mr Hawkins. •'The quality of the flax arriving now is much improved."
