NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Zetland.) The attendance at the meeting was large and representative, and the racing was most interesting throughout. The winning double was scored by Mr E. J. Watt's Gazeley and Muskerry, both being turned out in fine condition by T. Quinlivan. The proceedings opened with the Hack " Hurdles, Royal Blue being made a good favourite. The Merrie England gelding made no race of if, leading from the start and winning in a very easy manner. Black Squall, whose condition can be improved, ran a fair second. Eona was the popular fancy for the Shorts Handicap in a field of nine. Moriarty carried on the running, but was joined at two furlongs by Eona,, and the pair led well into the straight. Halfway down Martello put in his run, and won comfortably from Moriarty. Prism lost his rider at the start, while Toney rafused to leave the barrier, and took no part in the race. A nice field of nine lined out for the Rimutaka Hack Handicap, of six furlongs. Armamento was quickest out from an irregular despatch, but was quickly caught by Strathcona, who from this out had the race well in hand. The Strathbraan gelding won pulling up from Armamento and Culmination, his supporters receiving the good dividend of £l4 Bs. Twelve really good handicap horses faced the starter for the Wellington Handicap, the principal event of the meeting. Probably on account of the nature of the going, Mystification was made a strong favourite. From a fairly even send-off, St. Joe was first to show out in front. Going round the first turn he was joined by Douche, and the pair carried out the running to the straight, where Douche fell back and William moved up. Opposite the grandstand Gazeley put in his run and won a good race by a length from St. Joe, who ran one
of his hc.it races. Sir Tristram and Hiro would have been closer up at the finish but for being chopped out at the start. The New Zealand Cup horses in the race were f.hc winner, Gaseh'y, Aeolus, Mystification, St. Joe, and Saga. Then came the Flying Handicap, of six furlongs. Muskerry got a flying start, Splendid Idea and Gawain having the worst of th' 3 despatch. The Mjrriwee filly won comfortably from Ox ton. Owing to the double being won by Mr E. J. Watt's horses, the same owner's Aboriginie was made under an even money favourite for the Wollesley Stakes, and the stable would not hear of the colt's defeat. The favourite got away well, but was quickly joined by Sir G. Clifford's Fleetfoot. In a desperate finish the latter won by less than a bngth, its supporters receiving the fine price of £5 10s. The eight contestants for the Wainui Handicap included the New Zealand Cup candidates, Paritutu. Vlaniapoto, Apa, Seaman and Glenjilin. Paritutu still has the appearance of not being quite tightened up; Maniapoto appears to be sound, but
is big in condition. Apa was certainly the fittest of the field, while Seaman and Glenullin can do with some] sharpening-up gallops. The race "resolved itself into a great battle between Apa and The Stake, the former scoring by a nose.
The day's racing was brought to a conclusion with the Spring Hack Handicap, of five furlongs. Axite, by Mauser-Capucine, cut out the running to the turn, where Dawn got to the front, and racing in good style wun by a length trom Ney, who headed Axite in the last few strides.
