WAIRARAPA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

The following is the President's

:report for.the year ending September 30th, 1907:—Your directors have in submitting the annual "report and statement of accounts for the year ending September 30th, 1907, to be presented at the annual meeting of members to be held on Saturday, October 19th, at 2 p.m.. in the Masterton A. and P. Association's office, Masterton. The Society was again fortunate in being favored * with an exceptionally fine day for its •annual gathering, a fact amply verified by the gate receipts, which totalled £195 19s—nearly £lO in advance of the Society's previous best takings. Fro-n a spectator's point of view the gathering was eminently satisfactory, your directors having wisely increased the value of prizes in many of the leading events, thus -ensuring the presence of a number of the most prominent New Zealand athletes among the entrants. A perusal of the attached statement will disclose a healthy condition as regards the Society's finances, the receipts from the annually-recurring sources of revenue showing an increase of £6 over the previous year's figures, despite the fact that considerable difficulty was experienced in disposing of the publican's booth. As pointed out in the president's published report of sports and concert in January last, the Society has been called upon to meet expenditure which did not occur during the previous year, and it is highly improbable that there will be a recurrence of the same for some considerable time. Your directors refer, in this connection, to the renewals of, and ~. -additions to plant, and an unusual \ run of donations by ths Society. The annual concert conducted by the Society again proved a success in every way,, and showed a profit of £ls 8s •6d. With a view to increasing the Society's membership, your directors •decided to again entertain members at an Ingleside on June 27th, in the Foresters' Hall. This function proved su;h a social success that your directors were induced to hold another on •July 31st, in the Drill Hall. To the latter a small charge was made for admission. The total co3t of the two Inglesides was £4l 8s lid, receipts £2O 6s, era loss of £2l 2s lid. Against this must oe credited the election of 28 good members, 14 of whom paid their subscriptions for 1907-08 in advance. Membership at September 30th, 1906, including honorary members, totalled 151; during the year 14 have been removed from the roll, and 52 elected, thus leaving at present a total of 189. Your directors regret that among the removals from the roll is included one by death, namely, Mr John Stewart, for many years honorary piper to the Society. In October of last year Mr T. Duncan, who had creditably filled the office of secretary to the Society for a number of years, resigned the position to take up his residence in Wellington. Mr J, B. Emmett was elected from a number of applicants to fill the vacancy, and I must say has given every satisfaction both as to his book-keeping and working for the Society. As you are aware, we have been deprived of the privilege of having a publican's booth in the Park. II will therefore be the duty of directors to say whether the sports are to be held in the Park or elsewhere. Personally I favour leaving the Park, as we cannot afford to lose our revenue from the booth. You will be called upon, in accordance with the rules of the Society, to elect a President, two Vice-Presi-dents, a Treasurer, an Auditor, and twenty-four directors. Mr W. Sellar has given notice to move at the annual meeting:— That rules 14 and J5 be altered to permit of the Society's financial year closine; on June 30th, and the animal meeting of members being held on the 2nd week in August.
