LABOUR REPORT.

The Journal of the Department of | Labour for October contains the fol- J loWjjfcg concerning Masterton, Grey- j town, and Tinui:— . ■ Masterton.—Again a wet period | has to be chronicled. The unseasonable weather experienced has greatly retarded all outdoor work, and consequently there has been a great amount of broken time. As recorded for some months past, the building trade is very brisk, and contractors report a busy time ahead. A contract has been let at over £3,800 to re-build the shops recently 'damaged by fire, and plans are out for another two-storey brick building in Queen Street. Building trades: Exceptionally good in all branches. Saddlery: Fair business reported. Blacksmithing: Good. Coachbuilding: Good average business being transacted. Engineering: Improving. Moulding: Still continues good. Coachpainting: Good. Sa3h and door making: All hands fully employed. Tailoring: Improving, though the volume of business being done is not up to that of this time last year. Plax-miliing: Local mill started with good prospects. Furniture trades: Medium business 'reported. Dressmaking and millinery': Moderate. Unskilled labour: Since last report several have applied for work. Of these two were sent to Government and two to private employment. No doubt as the weather improves work will be more plentiful. Greytown.— Building trade 3: Fairly busy. Miscellaneous: The Greytown cheese factory has now commenced wojk for the season, and a good sup- . Thfflßtory was enlarged during the Sw'wvSf This was necessary to cope with the increasing supply of milk. Unskilled labour: Local labour is fully employed. There is no demand for outsiders. Tinui.—Unskilled labour: All local men have been fairly well employed during the month at scrub-cutting, fencing, ploughing, draining, and at road work, but the wet weather prevented them getting in full time. There were several swaggers, young and able bodied men, seen on the road during the month. All of them got employment in the district at scrub-cutting at Is per hour, out of which thev have to pay 12s per week for food. ' There is plenty of work for good men in this district at the present time.
