SECULAR EDUCATION. Received October 4, 7.35 a.m. LONDON, October 3. The Right Rev. E. A. Knox, Bishop .of Manchester, speaking at the Church Congress at Yarmouth, argued that the country did not desire secular education, despite the recent vote of the Trades Union Congress. WELSH DISESTABLISHMENT QUESTION. Received October 4, 7.35 a.m. LONDON, October 3. The President of the Board of Trade, the Right Hon. D. LloydGeorge, interviewed, said the Government would at an early date effect ively deal with the Welsh disestablishment question unless the peers are precipitated an appeal to the country on a constitutional issue. A GERMAN SENSATION. Received October 4, 8.50 turn. BERLIN, October 3. A pamphlet charging the German Chancellor (Prince Von Bulow) with immorality, haß been traced to a powerful clique who are plotting his overthrow. Prince von Bulow is prosecuting Herr Brand, the nominal author. AN ABSCONDING CASHIER. Received October 4, 8.50 a.m. BRUSSELS. October 3. Loyson, the absconding cashier, was arrested at Brussels. OVERDUE VESSELS. Received October 4. 11.2 a.m. LONDON, October 3. The four-masted barque Dundonald, which left Sydney on February 17th for Falmouth, has been posted as missing. The four-masted barque Silberhorn, which left Newcastle for Iquique on July 17th, is sixty days overdue. UNITED STATES NAVY. Received October 4, 8.50 a.m. NEW YORK, October 3. Washington telegrams anticipate that Pearl Harbour, Honolulu, will become a naval base for the Central Pacific, and Guam and Subig Bay become fortified stations.
MR KEIR HARDIE IN INDIA. Received October 4, 9.5 p.m. LONDON, Octoper4. Mr Keir Hardie has cabled to the Daily Mail stating that after investigating the situation in India he had concluded that there was no sedition worth mentioning. With sympathy, administration and legitimate reform the agitation would speedily subside. He admitted stating that the prohibition of meetings, etc., reminded him of Russia, and that the violation of Hindu women by Mahommedan rowdies reminded him of Armenia. He considered that colonial governmdnt would be the ultimate goal. Anything else attributed him were fabrications. The Daily Mail considers that these are only verbal modifications. Evidently Mr Hardie is not capable df weighing his words or understanding the real import of them. NEW DOCKS. Received October 4, 8.50 a.m. BERLIN, October 3. New docks are being constructed at Wilhelmshaven, with a view to its becoming the naval headquarters instead of Kiel. AN IMPORTANT COMMISSION. Received October 4, 8.35 a.m. LONDON, October 3. Mr Bertram McKennal. the Australian sculptor, has been commissioned to execute the statuary of a new cross for St. Paul's Cathedral.
