(From Our Own Correspondent). Thursday. Mr V. Higgins, of the staff of the Carterton District High School, received the sad intelligence, this af- ' tcrnoon, of the death of his brothers wife, which «occurred at WelThe deceased was 28 years pf age. Mr Higgins leit by this afternoon's mail train for Wellington to attend the funeral. The Methodist Mutual Improvement Society met in th 3 schoolroom last evefiiiig. There was a good attendance of members, and the Rev. W. J. Elliott presided, A debate took place on "Whohas the best time man or a woman;" The resjireetive sides were led by Mr G. A. Fair brother (men) and Misses C. Fenshaw and N. Glanville (women). A vote was taken, and resulted in favour of the men by three voteF. A meeting of the Carterton Fife Brigade was held in the new fire station llaaS evening. Mr Lumley (iapt:»in) was in the chair, and all the members were present. It was decided to extend' an invitation to Mr Jas. Gilberd, Secretary of the [J.F.B.A., to attend the ceremony in connection with the opening of the new station. A set of rules, prepared by the Rules Revision Committee, was approved of. Firemen G. Hall and H. McKenzie were granted three months' leave of absence.
