COAL FROM NEWCASTLE.

DOMINION'S SUPPLY LIMITED.

(By Telegraph—Parliamentary Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON Thursday.

Replying to Mr Barber in , the House, yesterday, the Minister of Mines staled that there had been a difficulty in obtaining a supply of New Zealand screened hard coal to maintain the reserve stocks of locomotive coal at the various depots in the Dominion, and therefore it was found necessary to purchase a considerable quantity of Newcastle coal during the past year. The local mines, the Minister added, were quite unable to meet the demands of the Department for coal. However, he concluded, Newcastle coal was purchased only when absolutely necessary for the proper carrying on of the business of the Department.
