WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL.
ENGINEER'S REPORT(From Our Carterton Correspondent) The following is the County Engineer's report presented at Saturday's meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council:— ' Dalefield Riding.—The Dalefield Road above the school has been patched, also Jcrvois and Waterson's Roads. General repairs have been made on Waihakeke, Joseph's and Waterson's Roads. Tenders have i been called for metalling Hodder's i Road, and for the concrete culvert cm Main Road South: During the summer the following work needs carrying out if possible:—Hilton Road, metalling from Borough boundary to end, about 440 cubic yards. Hodder's Road,. tenders called. Waihakeke Road: A total length of about 42 chains on end of Waihakeke Road and on Moody's Road requires metalling; /total, 550 yards. New road to Taumata Bridge, from Waihakeke Road to Mr Court's, and two chains a t co*r from Waihakeke Road to BridA - -. , . Belv§aere Riding.—General repairs have been effected on Brooklyn, Cobden and Main, Roads. Patching on • Norfolk Road has been completed, and the metal on that road and on Chester and Mangatarere Valley Roads has been raked in with the grader. The ford in the Hihaki Creek, on Hinau Gully Road, which scoured out badly in the recent flood, has been repaired. The western approach to the White Bridge, Belvedere Road, has scoured out considerably. It will be necessary to remove nart of the oVi wing and * re-fill* behind the sheeting with j boulders, etc. The following works ,will be necessary during the summer :—Manning's Road, re-metalling I yards. Chester Road, remeJWfe portion of Bishop's, scoured out by water, 100 yards crushed metal! It would be advisable to get a quantity crushed hereabouts for the work and for patching and 1 ' repairing on Norfolk' Road. Mount Holdsworth Road.—A contract was let to Mr . Thompson for ■ -■ work on this' road some three years , back, but no work has yet been done. Parkvale Riding.—Patching has been done on (Somerset Road and on Carter's Road. , The metalling at Gladstone, between the Maori Cutting and the Bridge is row complete, except for breaking the stones. I would propose that the following works be gone on with at the first opportunity: —Kokotau, re-metalling flat from comer of Eaton's Road td corner gojjy tp bridge > 780 cubic yards. Cary,&bi Line, a I contract for 150 cubic % Ikrds has already been let (1905-6) but was never carried out. Somerset Road, a contract for 300 cubic yards has already been let (1905-6),.! but ' never started. . I Maungaraki Riding. General I repairs have been effected on the Gladstone - Longbush and Gladstone-East Coast Road 3. The worst holes on the unmetalled portions of Ahiaruhe and Ponatahi Roads have been filled, and men are now working on the Ahiaruhe ■ Road. On the Admiral Road the greater portion of the western aide has been cleared up, and when this is completed I propose to start the men up from the" other "side, filling the holes and putting in some culverts, for which 'Mr Whiteman has promised to cut the timber. There is a large bluff of metal near the bottom, on the eastern side, the removal of which would greatly improve the alignment of the road, and which could be easily and i cheaply utilised in metalling the bad portions hereabouts." There are also indications of' metal on the top of the hill, which I propose to prospect. I have inspected Drisc'oll Road, and for a clay road find it in very good repair. There are a few deep ruts in places, and these I will have repaired after .the more urgent works are finished. The clay portions of the Main East Coast Road are now begun, and the ruts and holes are being repaired for summer traffic. Proposed summer works—Uncom- -. pleted contracts, Erbga Road, LongfT bush Road. Formation Admiral i Road, about 80 chains. Tenders have * been called for formation of Tupu- ■ , riipuru Road, grading flats and easy iidino-sat Tupurupuru. Patching on be Maungarakis. 200 cubic yards. Metalling from Craigie Lea corner for one mile towards Wharau, 1,200 cubic yards. On Mr York's property, opoosi'te Land's End, there are several beds of metal, but of poo* quality. From the larger of these 1 deposits 800 yards of metal could be probably got, and the road from here to Main Road, which would cost , about £2O, would pass near other smaller deposits. In places, there is a large amount of stripping.
