NOT TO 1 BE CALLED OUT. STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. (By Telegraph—Parliamentary Correspondent). WELLINGTON, September 27. Speaking on the question of defence and the published statement that the Defence Council had decided to call out the militia for active training, Sir Ward said, in the House this afternoon, that there was no provision in the Defence Act 1900 for calling out the militia, and the Government had no intention of doing anything of the kind. The intention of the Council really was to ascertain the available force at every seaport in case of necessity for service. There was no intention of calling out the militia, and the Government was not in favour of conscription o r of the militia being called out.
