MAIL SERVICES.

STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. During the course of a debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday afternoon, the Premier made a statement regarding mail services. He was, he said, greatly in favour of the Vancouver service, ai d he believsd we would get d thoroughly effective "All-R-xl" service, lut we could not get it for £20,000 a year. The sum of £20,000 that appeared on the Estimates was for a monthly service alternating with the San Francisco service. Every effort had been made by him, aided by the managing director of the' Union Company, to get a service from Vancouver to Australia and New Zealand, but without success, for the reason that Queensland must for the present be included. This matter had not been neglected by the Government. What it was trying to get was a fortnightly mail service from Vancouver by steamers of a very high quality compared to those now running, but he could not disclose details ofconfidential negotiations which were taking place. The Govei'nment, he added, was doing ali in its power to bring about an "All-Red" route, and he had every reason to hope that the negotiations that were proceeding between the British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand Governments would result in the establishment of such a service.
