THE AUSTRALIAN TARIFF.
A WARM CONTROVERSY. Received September 26, 9.28 a.m. LONDON, September 25. There has been a warm controversy in The Times relating to the Australian tariff. A correspcndent, over the signature "Zollverein," declares* that Mr Deakin (the Federal Prime Minister) is a bondsman of the Labour party. He adds that the tariff shows Mr Deakin's complete subjection to Labour. The Federal Premier had shea his Imperialist ideas, and tariff reform in Australia was oply a stalking horse for Protection, buttered with Socialism. Another correspondent, signing himself "Tariff Reform," ridicules the idea of Labour imposing the tariff on Mr Deakin, and contends that a policy which the bulk of Australia supports must have something to say for itself.
