HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. m • The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable message from the High Com • miss-ioner, dated London, Sepember 21st:— The mutton market is firm, but the demand is only moderate. Arrivals are very light, and no alteration in price has been experienced since last week. The lamb market is very firm, and a good demand continues on account of the fine weather. There is, however, a dull sale for heavy carcases. Canterbury lamb is quoted at 5Jd and other than Canterbury at EJd per lb. The beef market closes weak, and lower prices prevail. Present quotations are 3|d and 2j}d per lb for hind and fore quarters respectively. The butter market is very firm, and there is a large demand for better grades. Lower quality is dull of sale. Choicest New Zealand is quoted nominally at 109s, Danish 117s, Irish 108s, Siberian 98s per cwt. The cheese market is firm, and there are only small supplies on hand. Canadian white is quoted at 60s, and coloured make at 61s per cwt.
The hemp market has lost improve ment in price, and closed weak on account of a. decline reported from Manila. Good fair grade on spot is quoted at £32 ss, fair grade £29 ss, and fair current Manila £33 per ton. The cocksfoot seed market is risimr, and there is a better demand for this commodity. The average price of ulean bright dressed 171b seed is 64s per cvvt. The wool market closes strorg.
