WELLINGTON, September 24^ A "scene" occurred in the Legislative Council this afternoon. The Hon. Wi Peru, the recently appointed Maori member, when speaking on the Statutes Repeal Bill got rather wide of the mark, and alluded to his previous connection with the Lower House. He said that when he was in the House ho was a man of boisterous disposition, and used to get angry. "Now/' he continued, "I have qualified myself to become a member of this Chamber, where all are gentlemen." After making a reference to the rights of the Maori he glared at the Hon. J. D. Ormond, and said: "Mr Ormond, you take care of them. If 3ou neglect them I will break your nose." After the Hon. J. Rigg had alluded to the matter, the Acting-Speaker (Hon. Mr Smith) ordered Mr Wi Pere to withdraw the remark, and after making a rambling statement he complied.
