TURF NOTES,
(By Zetland.)
Subterranean (late Submarine), who was trained last season by M. McGrath at Opaki, was sold recently in Melbourne for 1,000 guineas. He has been solidly backed to win the Caulfield Cup. During the week Maniapoto has been backed to win the New Zealand Cup. The Soult horse is said to be doing good work at Wanganui, but there ai'e grave doubts as to whether he can be ready to run a severe race over two miles by November 2nd. Truce, owned by the estate of the late Hon. W. W. Johnston, has been withdrawn from the New Zealand Cup. The horses in this ownership will not be raced until after the end ■cf the year. C. Jenkins has been engaged to lide Apa in the New Zealand Cup.
Arthur Oliver is to have the mount on Mahuta, and W. Young will steer Pari tutu. Record nominations are expected for the Masterton meeting to be held next month. The Secretary, Mr A. riathaway, is keeping owners reminded of the fixture, and is confident of a good response. Visiting owners should be well satisfied with the course proper, for it will probably be in splendid order for the fixture. Mr Wi Hutana, of Maryborough, who ranks as one of the district's racing men, and who is certainly one of the best judges in Wairarapa of a thoroughbred, has given up training operations, business matters now claiming his attention. Grand Jury has been sold to a Martinborough sportsman, and a gelding by Sou'wester has been purchased by a Lower Valley sportsman, who has given it to.T. Ross to train. Mr H. McManaway, owner of Mahuta, scored at Rangitikei with the veteran Moeraki. This son of Ascot is yet short of condition, but may win hurdle races during tl.e season.
Mr VV. E. Bidwill's Elevation is looking bright and well just now, and is in forward condition. He will probably race in the Hawke's Bay Guineas before being taken to Riccarton.
The Merrie England gelding in D. Wilkinson's stable at Clareville is improving rapidly, and may run a good race in the Wairarapa Guineas in November.
Fuli Rate has already been coupled with five or six New Zealand Cup horses for the Cup and Stewards double. The Stewards' Handicap may be a difficult race to win this year, as there are a number of highclass sprinters engaged in this event.
