FIRE AT TEMUKA.

TIMARU, September 20. A fire broke out at Temuka, this morning, whereby a block of four wooden buildings was totally destroyed. The fire when discovered had a strong hold, and the brigade confined their efforts to saving the properties adjoining, and on the opposite side of the street. Of the premises destroyed two were owned by C. Bates and Co., and occupied by C. Angus, plumber (who with his family occupied the rjar portion of the building), and Cameron, tobacconist and hairdresser. The other two were the property of Mrs C. Hornbrook and tenanted by C. Winn, photographer, and Strange and Co., drapers. For a time it was feared that the fire might spread into the Temuka Hotel, recently erected, but a brick wail saved it The fire apparently started in Cameron's shop, but there is no clue as to its origin.

The insurances were as follow: Bates, £450, in the Royal Office; Angus, £l5O, in the Manchester Office; Cameron, £2OO, in the Norwich Union Office; Winn, £75 in the Phoenix Office; Strange and Co., £IOO, in the Norwich Union Office, and £IOO in the Victoria. The premises' of Mrs Hornbrook were not insured, the policy having been allowed to lapse a few days ago-
