DOMINION DAY.
Concerning the celebrations om Dominion Day (September 26th), the following memorandum has been addressed by the Secretary of the Wellington Education Board to the various headmasters of schools and chairmen of school committees in the Wellington district: —"The Government has intimated a desire that. Dominion Day shall be inaugurated with fitting ceremony at the various schools of the colony, and that the school children shail be granted a holiday. The Board, therefore, requests Committees throughout this, district to arrange for such a celebration of the occasion as in their various circumstances appears fitting,, co-operating with the Mayor or the chairman of the local body in thedistrict. It is suggested that somelittle time should, on the preceding d y, be devoted to informing the minds of the scholars in the significance of the occasion, and that Thursday should be observed as a„ complete holiday; or that, after being addressed in the morning by members of Committees and others, the children should be dismissed forthe day. It is requested that cadets be associated with volunteers in any local celebration. In Wellington the cadets have, by arrangement, with the Education Department, been invited to attend the ceremony at Newtown Park. After assembly at • battalion headquarters, each battalion will proceed, by a route to be indicated later to the Commanding Officer, to Newtown Park, arriving not. later than 1.45 p.m. sharp. It is suggested that some little time on preceding days be devoted to preparation for the ceremonial drill, including the march past in column. For further information regarding route and order of ceremony officers commanding battalions are referred to the Officer Commanding the Wellington District."
By Telegraph —Press Association. TIMARU, September 20. A meeting of citizens determined to celebrate Dominion Day without interfering with the course of business, reading the declaration formally at 11 a.m. and again in the afternoon during the usual half-holiday. Protests were made on behalf of the business people, and schools against increasing the number of holidays, and the Town School Committees have refused to give more than a half holiday. A compromise was therefore effected.
