NEW SOUTH WALES PARLIAMENT. Received September 19, 9.28 a.m. SYDNEY, September 19. The new Parliament meets on October 2nd.

GOLD BUYING AND DISHONESTY. Received September 19, 8.30 a.m. MELBOURNE, September 19.

A deputation asked the Minister for Mines to amend the law with regard to gold-buying. The deputation made a startling statement concerning large quantities of gold which hacj reached the hands of illegitimate buyers. It was alleged that some of the latter kept silent crushers on the premises, which were most elaborately guarded.

FAKED PETITION. Received September 19, 10.23 a.m. MELBOURNE, September 19. Sir William Lyne, Acting Federal Premier caused much merriment in the House by presenting a petition against the tariff from his own electorate, and signed, apparently, by himself and Mr Deakin (the Premier), amongst others. Sir W. Lyne protested against faked petitions. The matter was referred to the Printing Committee to investigate.

THE MODERN CHURCH

Received September 19, 10.23 a.m. ADELAIDE, September 19.

At the sittings of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Australia, the Rev. Dr. Clouston, in his opening address declared that there was a decided revolt against the Church. People were discriminating between Chris 4 ; and the Church; they said the modern Church did not fairly represent the original society established by Christ. Christ had preached to outcasts, and had associated with sinners, and their Church with its respectabilities and pew rents, was for the weil-.to-do., and respected.
