HEALTH OF SCHOOL CHILDREN.
By Telegraph—Press Association,
AUCKLAND, September 13. Dr. Max Herz, reporting to the Board of Education on the recent medical examination of the school children, stated that the quantity of ricketts in New Zealand was 1.3 per «&t., against 18 per cent, in Europe. WSfteral curvature of the spine appeared in 7 per cent., against 25 to 30 per cent, on the Continent. Cases of scobosis seen here were much less pronounced in character than the European. The rarity of these complaints he attributed to f.he population having inherited a good disposition and a wholesome way of living, eating, etc. He is afraid the authorities can claim iittle credit for it. On the contrary, the authorities had in some respect done that which tended to aggravate the conditions. Dr. Herz commented On the bad way in which New Zealand boys and girls carry themselves. He says that physical training is amazingly neglected, especially as the sitting accommodation in the schools is not at all what science asks.
