CELEBRATING DOMINION DAY.

PALMEKSTON N., September 18. The committee of business men which regulates local holidays, decided, this morning, not to observe Dominion Day, as invited by the Premier, but only the usual half-holiday in that week. Several speakers objected strongly to Dominon Day becoming a statutory holiday, stating that there were too many holidays already. AUCKLAND, September 18. At the Board of Education meeting, to-day, several members spoke strongly against another school holiday. The board resolved unanimously to forward a telegram from the Education Department to the. various school committees with notification that the board leaves the committee to decide in what manner Dominion Day shall be observed. CHRISTCHURCH, September 18. The Mayor has declared Dominion Day a holiday. It will be decided on Monday next if there is to be any official ceremonial. WELLINGTON, September 18. Workmen are busy fitting up electric wiring for' the purpose of illuminating the Parliamentary Buildings, and the Government Buildings on the evening of Dominion Day. The General Post Office will also be deco-ated. The lights on the State buildings will be red, white and blue, in appropriate designs. The Education Department has circularised the Education Boards throughout New Zealand asking for co-operation in celebrating the occasion, the suggestion being that the scholars shall have a holiday, and the cadets take part in any local military demonstrations. The Mayor of Wellington requests the citizens to observe a holiday on Dominion Day.
