SERIOUS GAS EXPLOSION.
By Telegraph—Press Association
DUNEDIN, September 12. An escape of gas, presumably the result of a broken main, led to a rather serious explosion in a house in Hanover Street this afternoon. A smell of gas in the neighbourhood had been very pronounced since Saturday, and yesterday afternoon, was almost overwhelming. Gas must have escaped from the main into an old water-sewer and then found its way through the drainpipe into the kitchen, where a fire was burning. The result was a terrific explosion, almost filling the room with flame. The kitchen was set ablaze, but the fire was eventually extinguished. There was one woman in the room at the time. The force of the explosion was concentrated to one spot, otherwise the result would have been disastrous. When workmen were set to work to locate the leak the striking of a stone by a pickaxe caused a spark, and ignited the gas in the sewer, flames shooting up through a manhole. The outburst was, however, only a temporary one.
