TURF NOTES.
(By Zetland.)
Messrs Burt Bros., of Featherston, .have had the misfortune to lose the* well-known stallion Somerled, by Chnranil,'—'jair.t;a, which died this v.cck. The horse was gradually com-
ing into favour with breeders, and the monetary loss to the owners is therefore considerable. By running second in the Park Stakes at the Horowhenua meeting this week, Mahuta performed very creditably, when it is taken into consideration that it was his first race in public this season. The son of Mahaki is big in condition at present, but the racing at Levin will have greatly improved him. Master Delaval, Elevation, Seal Rock and Mahuta are the ruling favourites for the New Zealand Cup. The first named two are doing satisfactory work, but Seal Rock is reported to be gross in condition, and wears a bandage on one of his forelegs. It is thought that he may have to be hurried in order to be ready for the big event or- November 2nd. The late?t addition to W. Garrett's team is a chestnut filly by Blue Jacket—Yattaghan, therefore a halfsister to that good performer, Paritutu. On breeding lines the filly should win races when in the right condition to perform in public. The New Zealand steeplechasers Eclair and Phaetonitis have been taken over to Australia, where they are expected to add to the winning score of horses owned inthi? country. The veteran, Haydn, is to be taken over this week. The Canterbury Jockey Club intends making a new departure at its Cup meeting in connection with the working of the totalisator. It has been decided to close the machine some minutes before the advertised time for the starting, of events. Electric bells will warn the investing public of the closing time, which will also be shown by means of an indicator. The innovation will mean that in 'future there will not be any complaints relative to tickets being rung on after a race, audit will enable investors to gain a correct idea of the dividends before the events are run. Royal Maid, who ran second in the Maiden Hack Race at Levin, on Wednesday, is the first of the Knight Errants to race in public. The filly is owned by Mr H. W. Clay, and is possessed of considerable pace. English Rose, by Merrie EnglandYellow Rose, a full sister to Mr R. Knox's Merne Rose, won the Trial Plate at Ashburton on Wednesday, beating a strong field. The tho-oughbred mare, syrs, by Mauser—Blue Bell, and a two-year-old filly by Merrin England—Blue Bell, were sold this week to Mas terton residents through the agency of Mr J. R. Nicol, auctioneer.
