NIGHTCAPS DISASTER.
By Telegraph—Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Sei timber 2. The Nightcaps Commission started taking evidence, to-day, at Riverton, in connection with the disaster at the Nightcaps Mine. During the examination of Mr Green, Inspector of Mines, the Chairman reminded him that the Commission was not a board of amateurs, and that everything witness said he would be asked to sig-\ Witness replied that he would, without fear, sign everything he said. He admitted that the provision of Section 51 of the Act had not been strictly enfurced because he thought it was not neces&ary. Extra precautions should have been taken, and specially experienced men should have been put in charge of the work. He did not notify the company to that effect because experienced men were working there at the time of his visit. Mr Handyside, Director of the Nightcaps Company, expressed the opinion that the accident was due to the effect of the earthquake on the previous Thursday.
