WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL.

(From Our Carterton Correspondent.)

$ ' The monthly meeting of the Wairaraoa South County Council was held" at the County Council, Carterton, on Saturday last. There were present:—Crs W. Perry (chairman), T. O. Moore, R. G. Welch, F. Court, R. Barrer, D. Douglas, H. S. Mason, J. Strang and G. Stevens. The treasurer reported as follows: —Cr balance at Bank of New Zealand, £1,042 Is lOd; receipts since last meeting, £3,531 Is 3d. The report was adopted. The Clerk reported having attended at the Land Board Office, at Wellington, in connection with the purchase of ten acres of land at Te Wharau. Cr Moore reported that he had paid a visit of inspection to Brooklyn j Road, and stated that he had instructed the Engineer to lower the sheathing on the Mangstarere Bridge. Cr Court had made arangements with Mr Oates to supply three cwt. of ■wire: Mr Oates to do the work satisfactorily. The Clerk reported that Mr Bunny had offered to remove a cottage to a site suitable to the Council for the sum of £6O. On the motion of Cr Moore, seconded by Cr Strang, it was decided that the cost of removal be ascertained and that the matter be brought up for consideration at next meeting of the Council. Correspondence was received from Mr W. Fisher, stating that he would clean out the drain on Somerset Road, and lay pipes to carry off the water providing the Council supplied the material. The request was granted. The Secretary of the Belvedere Dairy Company wrote asking for the services of the Engineer to take some levels for a water supply from the Hiraki Stream to the factory. On the motion of Cr Moore, seconded by Cr Perry, the Engineer was authorised to do the work at his own price. Permission to lay the pipes to carry the water was granted by the Council. Mr C. E. Miller wrote complaining of the state of Mangatarere Valley Road, and also that Booth and Co. had removed some rails without removing the sleepers, thereby making the road dangerous. Cr Moore moved, and Cr Stevens seconded, that the Engineer be instructed to visit the locality, and if the road is in the state that it is reported to be, the AClerk to give notice to Booth and Co. . 'yp put the road in repair. A letter was received from Messrs i Gawith and Logan to the effect that! the Council had not paid Mr York, of liankview, for two acres of land purchased by the Council for a gravel pit, and stating that Mr York had in♦'hem to act for hiin in the roafcttr. Ellis stating that the culvert in | front of his property was blocked, | and the flow of water impeded there- | bj, causing his land to be flooded ■when it rained heavily. Mr W. C. Ellis wrote calling the | Council's attention to the state of j Hilton Road, and offering to contri-; bute £5 towards the work if the Council would put the road in repair. On the motion of Cr Welch, seconded by Cr Strang, it was resolved that; the Engineer report at next meeting with a view of having the work done. Mr W. Moore, Chairman of the Carterton Library Committee, wrots forwarding a copy of the report and balance sheet for the year 1906 for the Council's inspection, and asking the Council to appoint an ex-officio member of the Library Committee. Cr Welch was appointed to the posi- ' tion. |

The Engineer's report was read. Cr Barrer moved that a rough estiof the cost of metalling the E iSt Coast Road be prepared, and tjat the Engineer also prepare a list of works required in each riding during the coming season. It was reported that Mr W. F. York had agreed 1o let the Council take metal off his property at Id per cubic yard. The Committee's report in connection with purchasing a section of land for building purposes was read. The Committee's report was adopted, and it was agreed that steps be taken to purchase a section on Belvedere fioad at £IOO per foot. Accounts amounting to £538 14s 7d were passed for payment.
