It is rumoured that Mr BruceSmith aspires to the Leadership of the Opposition. SIR W. LYNE AND SIR J. FORREST. INCREASING ACRIMONY. MELBOURNE, August 31. There i« increasing acrimony between Sir William Lyne and Sir John Forrest. The latter, while explaining his position with regard to the Braddon clause and old age pensions, remarked on the position of the Government in the matter. Sir William Lyne interjected: "The ex-Treasurer must not presume to speak as a member of the Government." Sir John Forrest: "You want to repudiate the Prime Minister." Sir William Lyne: "I want to repudiate you." Sir John Forrest: "Oh, you're a humbug."
TIMBER FOR NEW ZEALAND. Received September 1, 4.20 p.m. HOBART, August 31. In order to enable local timber merchants to fulfil orders received from New Zealand, it has been decided to approach the Union Company urging that greater facilities for the transport of cargoes be granted. It is stated that a large quantity of timber is stacked on the wharves awaiting shipment. Received September 2, 1.7 a.m. HOBART, September J. The timber merchants have communicated by cable with the Union Company in connection with the delays in shipping timber to New Zealand. It is stated that some merchants are negotiating for outside steamers to carry their timber.
