Mr Lav.ibert, Civil Lord of the Admiralty, informed Mr Cox, M.P., that no strategic value attached to the landing of the Pacific cable at Fanning Island and Honolulu. A NEW STEAMER. Received August 30, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, August 29. The Nerchana, a new steamer for the Tyser line, was launched at Belfast. OBITUARY. Received August 30, 8.30 a.m. NEW YORK, August 29. The death is announced of Mr Nelson Morris; a Chicago packer. He leaves between fifteen and twentyfive millions sterling. (Mr Morris was born in the Black Forest, Germany, in 1839, and was self-educated. He emigrated to the United States at the age of twelve, arriving in Chicago in 1854, where he secured employment in stock yards. Two years later he began business for himself. He founded the packing firm of Morris and Co., and the Fairbank Canning Company. He was an officer or director of several banks or other companies.) IMMIGRATION. Received August 30, 9.27 p.m. OTTAWA, August 30. j Seventy thousand immigrants have settled in the Province of Ontario this year. Eighty per cent. of them are British. ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL. Received August 30, 9.27 p.m. j LONDON, August 30. The Committee of Architects report that St. Paul's Cathedral is in no immediate danger, but the fabric and subsoil should be periodically examined. TRANSVAAL 'UNIVERSITY COLLEGE. Received August 30, 10.25 p.m. PRETORIA, August 30. The Earl of Selbome laid the foundation stone of the Transvaal University College at Johannesburg.
