CARTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

(From Our Own Correspondent). TheJmonthly meeting of the Carter WSrßarough Council was held, on Tuesday evening", at the Council Chambers. The Mayor (Mr W. Moore) occupied the chair, and there ■were also present —Crs Hart, Masson, Toomath, Phillpotts, Browne, King, Reid, and Hughan. The Treasurer's statement, which showed an overdraft of £352 10s 9d, ■was read and adopted. The Chairman of the Works Committee (Mr W. Moore) reported that the pipes for the extension of water in Wyndham Street had arrived, and that the work was about to be commenced. Regular visits had been made to the reservoir, which was found to be in good order and working satisfactorily. The septic tank and filter beds had been attended to during the month and are working satisfactorily. Mr T. E. Maunsell had made application for his house, in Howard Street, to be connected with the drainage. . Dangemus holes had been attended to in Park Road, Belvedere, Kent, Wyndham, Lincoln, and Pembroke Streets, and repairs Jiad been effected in High Street with river metal, the work costipg, £6 12s. Several places in High Street had been repaired with river metal and screened metal had been placed on the footpath on Belvedere anc? Kent Streets. The formation of the footpath from Kent Street to the northern boundary had been done, and the •water-tables in Holloway Street attended to. The report was adopted. The Gas Committee reported that three new connections had been made with the gas main and three meters put in for gas cooking stoves. The gasworks had been connected with the telephone service. Mr Herdman had taken over the stock and gas fitting plant. An expert had to be employed to take stock, make out price lists, etc., which work was carried out in a very satisfactory manner by Mr H. Browne. Two more Councillors were recommended to be added to the Gas Committee. Cr Masson informed tLe Councillors that it was necessary that two more members should be added to the Gas Committee to deal with minor matters, and mentioned that the Council had in hand a large stock of gas fittings, worth £3OO, which was not being disposed of very quickly. Cr Browne considered that the Gas Committee should make a reduction m the price of gas. The Mayor said that the charges for the gas were based on local consumption. Crs Toomath and Browne were appo/Jtoed to the Gas Committee. TFaFNrommittee's report was adopted. The building inspector reported that permits had been issued for the erection of a cottage, erection of a boarding-house, and alterations to a blacksmith's shop. The total value of the proposed buildings and improvements was £I,OBO, and the' amount of £2 12s 6d in fees had been received. The inspector's report was adopted. The Sanitary Inspector recommended that live houses be connected - •-'with the drainage system. The Inspector also - reported that a South Carterton resident had been violating

the by-laws by depositing rubbish on >hi? own section." The Inspector's report v/as adopted. Mr Gustofsen applied to have his property in Belvedere Street connected witb" / the drainage. The application was granted. Mr Coleman Phillips wrote stating that the water in Seddon Street was unable to get away, and if the matter ■was not attended to he would have to enter an action against the Council for damage sustained by him through the Council obstructing the course of the water. He stated that lie had last Friday offered the Town Clerk £lO towards improving <he street, but his offer had been refused. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. Mr T. E. Maunsell made application for the gas to- be extended down Queen Street to connect with his residence now in course of erection. The application was referred, to the Cas Committee. Twenty-two ratepayers petitioned the Council to interview the donors

of Carrington Park asking their sanction for a lease of a portion of the Park, two *and a half chains deep, adjoining High Street, as a section for building sites. The .petition was laid on the table. Amounts totalling £2lB Is lOd were passed for payment.
