FOOTBALL.

WELLINGTON y. AUCKLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 24. There was a fine day and a large attendance for the match between Auckland and Wellington, but owing to the recent rains the ground was soft and muddy. The Northern forwards played finely, but the backs were weak, and mainly owing to this the visitors were beaten by 11 points to 3. Wellington had four "All Blacks" behind the scrum, aid all of them were wonderfully fast for such a wet ground. Their dash and combination upset Auckland, and were in t vong contrast to the purely defensl ,e play of the visiting backs. It was only the slippery ball that saved Auckland several more tries, but it is quite likely on a dry ground the vigorous play of their forwards would have placed a few more points to their.credit also. In the first spell Mitciiinson scored after a brilliant run, <md in the second spell Anderson obtained two tries, from one of which a goal was kicked. Auckland's score was a try by Francis, who played a great game, and was splendidly seconded by the other forwards. TARANAKI v. WANGANUI. By Telegraph—Press Association. WANGANUI, August 25. The football match Taranaki v. Wanganui was played on Saturday afternoon. The" game throughout was of a very interesting nature, and was principally confined to the forwards division, of which both teams proved themselves fairly equal both in scrum and in loose work. If anything the local team had slightly th? better of it. The bacK play was d jappointing, but can easily be explained—the backs hardly ever gained possession of the ball. The final score was—Taranaki 5 points, Wanganui 3. The visitors' score was a very clever one by Hunter going through from a scrum on Wanganui's line, and Colman succeeded in adding the major points. In the second spell Wanganui obtained a mark from which Southcombe kicked a goal. r MARLBOROUGH v. NELSON. By Telegraph—Press Association. NELSON, August 24. Marlborough defeated Nelson, today, by 19 points to 8. The visitors put up all their points in the first spell, outclassing the local team in all departments of the game. Nelson livened up in the second spell, and were attacking for the greater part of the-time. Two tries were scored, one being converted. Marlborough play Golden Bay representatives, at Takaka, on Monday. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 25. The Wellington Junior representatives beat Hoiowhenua Junior representatives by Lo points to nil. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. MASTERTON v. RED STAR. The final match for the Wairarapa Senior Championship was played on the Matserton Showgrounds, on Saturday afternoon, when Masterton defeated Red Star by 12 points to nil. As the issue of the match did not affect the result of the championship not much interest was taken in the game. Masterton had slightly the best of the play throughout. In the first spell C. Ross scored a try for Masterton, which was not converted. In the second half tries were scored by Brenchley and Minett and O'Leary kicked a goal from a mark. Mr L. Williams was referee. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. RED STAR v. MASTERTON. The Red Star. Juniors defeated Masterton Juniors on the Masterton Showgrounds, on Saturday, by 12 points to 8.
