HYPNOTIC SUGGESTION.

A DOCTOR'S EXPERIENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 22. In reference to the publication in the Christchurch Press of a testimonial from Dr. Bakewell, of Auckland, respecting benefit received from treatment by an unregistered ! medical practitioner named Stanton, who was sentenced to four months' imprisonment the other day, Dr. Bakewell, on being interviewed by a Herald reporter, said he had not the slightest doubt that he had been really cured of career by Stanton through hypnotic suggestion. As far as the "white powders given him to take were concerned, he did not believe they had anything to do with the case beyond keeping up. the suggestion. Anyone who laughed at the idea of hypnotic suggestion in medical science must be very ignorant of what had been going on in the , medical world. Three wellknown medical men had diagnosed his case as cancer tumour in the throat. "At the time," he said, "it was either Stanton or deliberate suicide. I was in terrible despair, knowing the disease meant certain death, and was in that state of mind when suicide seemed the only course. I shall never forget Stantcp's piercing look and the good he did for me. Many medical men wrote to me on the subject including the British j Medical Association in Wellington. I replied that 1 had been cured by Stanton; that before they blamed me for going to him let them wait till they felt themselves condemne'l to death as I was. A man is not endowed with superhuman wisdom because he has passed the examinations of a medical corporation." By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 22. Interviewed in regard to Dr. Bakewell's statement by a Herald reporter, this evening, Dr. Challmor Purchase, absolutely denied that he had, after an examination of Dr. Bakewell, discovered, as alleged by him, anything in the way of a cancerous growth, which, according to Dr. Bakewell,*was subsequently cured by hypnotic suggestion.
