POWER OF ATTORNEY.
A question of importance was recently put to the Minister for Marine by Mr Fisher. It was as follows:—"Whether he will ascertain if it is true that the local agents of any shipping companies subsidised by the New Zealand Government do not hold powers of attorney on behalf of their respective companies, and may therefore escape the service of any writ in case of accident to workmen in their employ or for whom they may be liable; and if this is so, will the Minister take the necessary steps to alter this condition of affairs?" In the House* of Representatives on Wednesday the Hon. J. A. Millar gave the following reply:—"The Alley line of steamers, trading between Canada and New Zealand, is tho only line that is subsidised by the New Zealand Government. These steamers are registered out of the colony, and I understand that the agents do not hold powei* of attorney. The steamers about which some difficulty has arisen through the New Zealand agents not holding power of attorney are the Federal and South African steamers, but these are not subsidised by the colony. The matter of providing for this will be made in an amendment of the Shipping and Seamen Act."
