SHORT STREET RAILWAY CROSSING.
A committee of the Masterton Borough Council, consisting of the I Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine) and Crs J. H. Pauling, J. Prentice. W. Pragnell, A. Haughey, the Town Clerk, .and the Borough Engineer, paid a visit to the railway crossing at Short Street, yesterday morning, and met Inspector Kavanagh, of the Railway Department, in connection with the proposal to improve the view for vehicular traffic approaching the crossing, and thus minimise the risk of accident. The proposal ..of the Railway Department is to shift the present crossing 34 chains further south and thus avoid~the trees on Mr W. C. Cargill's property, which .at present block the view of the line of any. traffic approaching by road. Mr Kavanagh, however, pointed out that this proposal would create an awkward angle in Short S.tsee,t. The difficulty is .that Short Street is at present only half a chain wide. Mr W. B,' Chennells and Mr McKenzie are willing .to give a strip .of land sufficient to make the road .a full chain wide fronting their property. If Mr .Gargill can be induced to give a niece &£ his land .aud thus make the whole road a chain wide, it is .thought by- the committee that the present difficulty would be overcome and 3 clearjar view obtained of the line. The Railway Department are now lo be communicated with asking if Ihey .will consent to assist in ihis Jast proposal.
