The superintending engineers of the Australian shipping companies have presented Mr Peppard with an address of congratulation on the results of his work in inspecting refrigerated produce. SOCIALISTS AND JOHN BURNS. Received August 21, 8.23 a.m. LONDON, August 20. Battersea Socialists have initiated a vigorous campaign in order to try to oast Mr John Burns. (The Right Hon. John Burns, President of the Local Government Board, has represented Battersea since 1892.)
A STEEPLEJACK'S DEATH. Received August 21, 8.23 a.m. LONDON, August 20. Goldie, a famous steeplejack, fell 488 feet while repairing the top of Townsend's chimney in Glasgow, and was killed. THE CULLINAN DIAMOND. Received August 22, 12.27 a.m. PRETORIA, August 21. The Legislative Council, by 7 votes to 5, negatived a motion disapproving of the purchase of the Cullinan diamond for presentation to His Majesty King Edward. A NEW DOCK. Received August 22, 12.27 a.m. LONDON, August 21. The Admiralty, at a cost of £1,000,000, propose to build at Portsmouth u dock 850 feet long and 110 feet wide, to receive two Dreadnoughts simultaneously.
