PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT AND TRUSTS.
Received August 21. 10.44 p.m. NEW YORK, August 21. President Roosevelt, in laying the cornerstone of a monument at Princetown to commemorate the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers, stated that the Government ought to control the railroad corporations like they supervised the national banks. He was determined that none shall amass a great fortune by special privilege chicanery, wrong - doing, or use a fortune for anti-social purposes. Something must be done to secure the conviction of trust managers in criminal prosecutions thus stamping out the evil. He admitted the financial disturbance in Wall Street was partly attributable to the Government's determination to punish malefactors. It was those who possessed great wealth who brought about the financial stress in order to discredit the Government policy. It was hopeless for them to expect a reversal of policy during his tenure.
