HAWKE'S BAY v. WAIRARAPA.
(Special Reporter.) The Wairarapa and Hawkc's Bay representative teams met on the Carterton Showgrounds, yesterday after • noon. Wairarapa was represented by practically only a scratch team made up of Carterton, Rover seniors, two Masterton seniors, and a Grey town senior. K : v;zett, Todd, Gray, De Blois, and C. P.os3 were absent from the home tcnn:. The Hawke's Bay team, also, wad not fully representative. The ground was very heavy, and the ball was greasy and exceedingly difficult to handle. The game was principally a forward one, and Wairarapa were considerably superior in this department. The visitors' backs handled the greasy ball well, and were safer than the Wairarapa rearguard. The teams were as follow: —
Hawke's Bay. Fullback, C. Williams; threequarters, Baker, Lewis and Scullion; five-eighths, Tomlin and Hetakaini; half, Payne; wing, Stevens; forwards, Struthers, McCarthy, Baillie, Butoher, Thow, Ellingham and Caulton. Wairarapa.—Fullback, E. McKenzie; threequarters, Thompson, Minett and Crawley; five-eighth, N. McKenzie; half, McKinnon; wings, Hall and Henderson; forwards, Johnson, Judd, Wynes, Lyall, Phelps, Mason and Desmond. For some time after the kick-off play was of an even nature. Hawke's Bay attacked, but Thompson snapped up the ball and kicked into Lewis' arms and the latter attempted to pot a goal, but the ball went wide. Hawke's Bay continued to attack and Payne made a short run and kicked over the fullback. Tomlin attempted to gather up the ball when over the lin?, but knocked on. From the scrum the Wairarapa forwards cleared their line. Then Payne snapped up the ball and passed to Hetakaini, who beat his man and passed to Lewis, who ran round behind the posts and touched down. Lewis failed to convert. Hawke's Bay 3 Wairarapa 0 The ball was not long in play again before Caulton crossed the line from a forward rush. Hj converted the t:*y himself. Hawke's Bay 8 Wairarapa 0 The next noticeable piece of play was a fine run and kick by Henderson. A Hawke's Bay player took the ball and Henderson collared him, and a penalty was awarded against the Hawke's Bay man for holding the ball. E. McKenzie kicked a good goal. Hawke's Bay 8 Wairarapa 3 Wairarapa were forced twice in succession before the call of half- ■
In the second half, Wairarapa had much the best of the play, their forwards outclassing the visitors. Wairarapa set up a sustained attack and Hawke's Bay forced, Wairarapa returned to the attack, and McCarthy got the visitors out of a tight corner. Hawke's Bay rallied, and carried play past the half-way flag. They were again forced back, however, and had to touch down to gain relief. A splendid kick by Minett placed the Hawke's Bay line once more in clanger. Hetakaini punted high and the ball went back over his own line, and Wynes secured it and scored. E. McKenzie failed to convert.
Hawke's Bay 8 Wairarapa ... ... 6 The remainder of the game was a series of attack* by Wairarapa and forces by Hawke's Bay, the latter only twice getting into the home team's territory. The defence of the visitors, however, was very sound and no further score was registered. Just on the call of time Wairarapa were awarded a penalty, but E. McKenzie failed to place a goal, the angle being a very difficult one. The game thus ended with the scores— Hawke's Bay 8 Wairarapa 6 Mr J. McKenzie was refer2e.
