THE CULLINAN DIAMOND.
Received August 20, 11 p.m. LONDON, August 20. Reuter's Pretoria correspondent wires that the Assembly, by 42 to 19, resolved to present the Cullinan diamond to His Majesty King Edward. General Botha pleaded for unanimity in order to make the gift a national one. He declared that the Government did not contemplate fresh taxation. Sir G. Farrar dissented regretfully, owing to the actute distress amongst many of the loyal subjects of the King. He fel sure that King Edward would prefer that these were assisted than to receive a gift which was inopportune and unjustifiable. The Labour members supported the motion.
