HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, August 17th : The trade in mutton is very disapoointing, and only hand to mouth darnand is experienced. The Jamb market is steady, but is likely to decline in consequence of getting towards the end of the season. Canterbury brands o|d, and other than Canterbury s|d. The beef market is quiet, with moderate supply coming forward. Quotations are 3gd to 2gd for hindquarters and forequarters respectively. The butter market is quiet, but firm. A very brisk demand is experienced tor the best quality. The prospects for next season are improving, and there is no reason to anticipate a decline in price. Choicest New Zealand is 105s, Danish 112s, Siberian 965, per cwt. A large supply of' Canadian manufacture is arriving, and is quoted at 105s. The cheese market is steady. Canadian supplies are increasing. New Zealand white make is 60s, coloured 61s, Canadian white 565, coloured 58s per cwt. The hemp market is very quiet. Good fair grade, on spot, is quoted at £33 10s; good fair Wellington £29; fair current Manila, on spot, £34 10s; July-September shipments are quoted at above rates. The cocksfoot seed market is dull and very little business is doing; 171b seed is cuotsd at 58s per cwt.
