ACCIDENT TO A TRAIN.

ENGINE AND: THRE3 CARS DERAILED. By Telegraph—Press Association. GREYMOUTH, August 19. An accident happened, yesterday morning, to a passenger train from Otira to Grey, whereby the engine and three cars were derailed. The train had only covered three miles of the journey when the driver noticed a large rock come tearing down the hill. He whistled for brakes, which were promptly applied, but the line was covered with snow. The rock struck the cowcatcher of the engine and rebounding struck the first car. The engine ard three cars were derailed. In the front car there were two passengers, who , were thrown off their seats but were not injured. The engine-driver and fireman stuck to their posts. The engine and cars were severely damaged, the axle-boxes being broken and the cowcatcher carried away. A gang of men left town and had the line cleared by noon. The passengers from Christchurch got through to-night. The place where the accident happened is close by the 47 mile peg, and is considered very dangerous.
