MORTGAGES IN THE COLONY.

POSITION OF THE COLONY AS A WHOLE. *

During the year ended March 31st last 18,604 mortgages were registered in the colonv, the total sum involved being £13,110,096. The interest varied from nil to 24 per cent. A sum of £527,325 paid Ah. per cent.,-£6,313,670 paid 5 percent., £1,276,389 paid 5£ per cent., £1,682,874 paid 6 per cent., £454,760 paid 7 per cent, £283,240 paid 8 per cent., and £81,277 paid 10 per cent. The sums at interest higher than this totalled only a few thousands. A sum of £13,270 paid no interest at all, and the amount on which the interest was less than 4 per cent, totalled £33,278. The amount of money remaining secured by mortgage under the Land Transfer Act on March 31st, 1907, was £59,097,070, distributed as follows-.—Auckland , £5.092,109; Taranaki, £4,616,325; Wellington, £17,431,433; Hawkes Bay, £6,417,022; Poverty Bay, £1,168,737; Nelson, £1,332.871; Marlborough, £721,093; Canterbury, £13,127,375; Otago, £3,857,355; Southland, £51,159,095; Westland, £173,649. The. amount secured by mortgage on the corresponding date of last year was £53,480,098. The amount secured by mortgage under the Act during the last financial year was £12,708,772, and the amount paid off £7,091,800.
