MASTERTON ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.

The second con :ert of the Masterton Orchestral Society, which was held in.the Town Hall, last evening, attracted a fairly numerous audience, the dress circle being especially well patronised, a fact no doubt due to the large number of honorary members. The Society is in its fourth season of existence, and must be congratulated on its successful endeavours to cultivate orchestral music in spite of obvious difficulties. It contains excellent soloists for every class of instrument, the only noticeable weakness

lying in the second violins. The programme was of a lighter order, and was fully appreciated by the audience, the only strictly classical item, Beethoven's "Men of Prometheus," receiving a creditable rendering, the wood wind instruments doing full credit to their parts. Eilenberg's "The Hussars Come," and the sparkling "Soldateu Lieder," by that king of waltz writers, Gungl, forming the popular number of the first part of the orchestral items. In the second part the "Pizzicato Gavotte " and "Highland Patrol," hit the popular taste, both numbers receiving a recall. In one or two numbers the time was slightly erratic, conductor and orchestra not working too well together. A 'cello solo "Reverie," given by Mr H. Inns in the first part, and a violin solo "Frichh'ng's Erivachan," rendered by Mr Boyes, proved very acceptable numbers, both numbers being encored. Miss Green was the vocalist of the evening, her twosongs, "Beloved, it is Morn," and "To the Angels," were quite atreat, and were vociferously redemanded. Mr S. Earee was conductor, while Mr R. Boyes was leader of the orchestra. The accompaniments were played by Mrs F. J. Hunn. The piano was supplied by Mr J. Candy.
